BUILDING REGULATIONS:
BUILDING REGULATIONS:
All rooflights, regardless, must comply with the requirements of Building Regulations and relevant safety regulations. For example, glass rooflights for a domestic extension should normally have a laminated glass inner pane to prevent the risk of shattering and falling into a room, (normally requiring the inner pane to be at least 8.5mm Laminated glass). This unit has a 10.8mm Laminated, Toughened inner pane of glass – One of the thickest in the industry. British Standards stipulate that inner panes must always be laminated wherever rooflights are more than 4 metres above floor level.
Why Laminated?
Why Laminated?
Rooflights are typically available in laminated glass, or tempered glass. We recommend laminated glass rooflights in all instances. Building regulations are also leaning this way and are a requirement for certain out of reach, or above 4 meter applications. Laminated glass rooflights are preferred because they provide a greater level of safety to persons and property located beneath.
When a tempered glass rooflight breaks, the glass shatters into small pieces, which can then fall down into your home potentially damaging / harming anything below; including persons, pets, furniture, and flooring. Not to mention that when a tempered glass rooflight breaks, there is no longer a glass pane in the rooflight to protect the interior of your home from the exterior elements.
When a laminated glass panel rooflight breaks, the glass is designed to remain intact. Therefore the small shattered pieces of glass will not come cascading down into the interior of your home. The laminated glass pane will remain in the frame of the rooflight, continuing to provide some protection from the exterior elements.
In addition, the inter layer also acts as a UV filter, deflecting as much of the sun’s rays as possible, helping to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
In terms of durability and safety in the home, laminated glazing offers increased security for any rooflight as it becomes progressively harder to break through the glass even when it has been broken.
As we’ve already stated, laminated glass is one of the best ways to combat UV rays, but it’s also highly effective against solar gain for interiors too, especially when combined with a solar control glazing coating. This means that the laminated inner pane of the rooflight allows visible light to pass through into living space below, whilst absorbing and deflecting the vast majority of the UV transmittance.
Another huge benefit of laminated glazing is its ability to reduce the impact of external noise within interiors. It is significantly more effective at minimizing external noise pollution than a standard Triple-pane glass rooflight and even more so than a Double-pane glass rooflight.
